Nvidia backs robotics startup Generalist AI in stealth mode
A senior research scientist who worked at Google's DeepMind has started a new robotics company, called Generalist AI. Pete Florence, the founder and CEO, announced the startup during a panel at Nvidia’s GTC conference. Nvidia has already invested in Generalist AI through its venture capital arm, NVentures. The firm is known for its active investments, especially as Nvidia has seen major financial growth in the AI sector. Florence left DeepMind around a year ago. He explained that Generalist AI aims to develop general-purpose robots. He also mentioned that the company is currently in a stealth phase, meaning details about its projects are limited. Another DeepMind alumnus, Kamyar Ghasemipour, is part of the team as a founding technical staff member. Florence is not alone in starting new ventures. Many former DeepMind employees have launched their own companies focused on various technologies, including AI and biotech. Recently, DeepMind's robotics division introduced new AI models for controlling robots, and Florence’s work is mentioned in their announcement. While Florence couldn’t share specific plans for Generalist AI, he expressed a bold vision. He imagines a future where robots can perform any task, dramatically reducing costs for physical labor. Nvidia and Google did not provide comments on the news.
