Nvidia's upgrade improves global weather forecasting accuracy
Nvidia has announced an upgrade to its digital twin of Earth, aimed at improving weather forecasts. At the Nvidia GTC 2025 event, the company introduced the NVIDIA Omniverse Blueprint for Earth-2. This new version offers enhanced tools for forecasters to create more accurate weather models. Nvidia claims that severe weather events have caused a $2 trillion impact on the global economy in the past decade. By offering better forecasts, the company believes it can help reduce this economic damage. The updated model includes several tools such as GPU acceleration, a physics-AI framework, and microservices. These tools are designed to speed up the transition from model development to actual forecasting. This means that weather updates could be delivered in seconds instead of minutes or hours, which is common with older systems. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang emphasized the rise in extreme weather events and the urgent need for better forecasting to protect lives and property. Several major climate tech companies, including G42 and Spire, have already partnered with Nvidia to use this new technology. Huang also noted that the system could help industries prepare for climate change and weather-related disasters.
