NYC Council eases ID card access for illegal migrants
The NYC Council has passed a new law making it easier for illegal migrants to obtain city-issued residency ID cards. The legislation allows walk-in appointments and an appeal process for denied applicants. The vote was 39-7 in favor. Critics argue the bill undermines national security and is a response to federal immigration policies. Supporters claim it ensures dignity for all New Yorkers, especially marginalized communities. Since the program began in 2015, over 2.3 million IDNYC cards have been issued. The city reported a rise in demand, with 64,265 cards issued from July to October 2023, a 14% increase from the previous year.
