NYC experiences unusually frequent strong winds this March

New York City has been experiencing a lot of wind lately. For over half of the last three weeks, the city recorded "strong breezes" almost every day. This trend is expected to continue through Monday. Meteorologist Cody Braub explains that while the wind speeds themselves are typical for March, their frequency has increased. This change is due to powerful storms affecting the Midwest, which are pushing windy conditions toward the East Coast. These storms have brought cold air and high winds after they pass. The Midwest has faced severe weather this month, including a series of strong storms that caused destruction in eight states. At least 40 tornadoes hit the area, leading to significant damage and at least 37 fatalities. By the time these storm systems reach New York, they mostly bring rain and steady winds. In March, wind gusts in the city have averaged between 25 to 30 miles per hour. The National Weather Service considers gusts over 30 miles per hour as a “strong breeze.” Many days saw winds near or over these levels, which can add up over time. The windy weather will continue through Monday, with predictions of gusts up to 50 miles per hour. However, a calmer weather pattern should follow. Braub suggests that March will finish in a more peaceful manner compared to its windy start.
