NYC guard sentenced for negligence in suicide attempt
A New York City correction officer, Kenneth Hood, was sentenced to two years’ probation and 250 hours of community service for failing to prevent a suicide attempt at Rikers Island in 2019. Hood was found guilty of reckless endangerment and official misconduct after he did not act for nearly eight minutes while a detainee, Nicholas Feliciano, attempted to hang himself. Feliciano is now paralyzed due to the incident. The city previously settled a lawsuit with Feliciano's family for $28 million. Two other officers involved pleaded guilty to lesser charges, while Hood was fired following his conviction.
