Odisha to utilize DMF funds for local development
The Odisha government plans to use funds from the District Mineral Foundation (DMF) to help families affected by mining. This support will focus on areas within 5 kilometers of mining sites. Many families have lost land and livelihood due to environmental damage caused by mining. So far, only 6% of the DMF funds have been spent. Between April 2019 and January 2025, Odisha collected about ₹23,624 crore, but only ₹1,419.66 crore has been used. The DMF is designed to support local communities impacted by mining activities and promote environmental protection. The state's cabinet has approved an expansion of the support area. Directly affected regions will now extend from 10 kilometers to 15 kilometers, while the indirectly affected area reaches 25 kilometers. The funding will focus on improving livelihoods, skill development, and supporting agriculture for those affected by mining. The DMF Trust will decide how the funds are used, with at least 60% allocated to high-priority needs. These include drinking water supply, healthcare, and education, as well as support for women, children, the elderly, and the disabled. The remaining funds will cover other areas such as infrastructure and sanitation in mining districts.
