Okanagan sees strong travel demand this spring break
Kelowna International Airport (YLW) is experiencing a lot of activity as spring break begins. Daily passenger numbers range from 6,500 to 7,500, according to CEO Sam Samaddar. The airport has seen growth of about 10.5% in early 2025 compared to last year. There are expectations for a busy March ahead. However, travel plans are being affected by ongoing tensions between the U.S. and Canada. Some travelers are choosing to stay local or head to Mexico instead of the United States. Samaddar noted that demand for Canadian flights to the U.S. has dropped, but travel from the U.S. to Canada remains strong. American airlines, such as Alaska Airlines, are still reporting healthy numbers. This trend is also noticeable in the ski resorts of the Okanagan Valley. Many U.S. visitors are coming to the area for skiing. Michael J. Ballingall from Big White Ski Resort commented that the U.S. has embraced the Okanagan, with high occupancy rates during spring break. As both domestic and international travel increases, YLW is looking to expand its offerings. Samaddar mentioned that they are exploring ways to boost demand this summer.
