Older immigrants in Finland struggle to access services

A study from the University of Eastern Finland reveals that older immigrants and immigrants with dementia face significant challenges in accessing social and medical services. The research shows these challenges are linked to one another. Many of the barriers include language difficulties and limited digital skills. Immigrants often struggle to understand their rights and what services are available. Additionally, a lack of support from family and friends, as well as cultural differences, adds to their difficulties. Language issues particularly affect older immigrants and those with dementia, making it hard for them to use digital services. This can limit their access to important information. Furthermore, not having a support system nearby can increase the risk of abuse. While language training is provided for immigrants in general, older individuals may find it hard to learn a new language. For those with dementia, there is a risk of forgetting languages they have learned over time. Family, immigrant communities, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) play a key role in helping these groups access necessary services. However, the resources of NGOs are often stretched thin. Hence, increased support from state actors is essential. The study’s lead researcher, Alex Berg, believes hiring more bilingual staff could help immigrants seek services in their native languages. Providing information in multiple languages is also crucial for helping them understand their rights. The research urges service providers to avoid stereotypes and treat immigrants fairly, while considering their cultural backgrounds. The study is part of a larger research initiative funded by both the University of Eastern Finland and the European Union.
