One in three tree species faces extinction risk, IUCN report finds
Summary: A new report from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) reveals that over one in three tree species worldwide are at risk of extinction. This includes more than 16,000 species across 192 countries, with significant threats from logging, agriculture, and climate change.
The report highlights that the number of threatened tree species is more than double that of all threatened birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians combined. Islands face the highest risk due to urban development and invasive species, while South America has the greatest diversity of trees, with 3,356 species at risk.
The IUCN calls for increased efforts in forest protection, restoration, and conservation through seed banks and botanic gardens. This report coincides with the UN COP16 summit on biodiversity, emphasizing the need for increased funding to protect nature.
