Ong Ye Kung stresses need for strong governance in Singapore

Health Minister Ong Ye Kung emphasized the importance of a strong and effective government in Singapore as the country faces global tensions and economic challenges. Speaking on March 23, he acknowledged that Singaporeans understand the need for capable leadership, especially in these uncertain times. Ong responded to concerns about the growing desire for more opposition MPs in Parliament. He reflected on his past experiences, especially during the 2011 general election when he lost in Aljunied GRC. He described that election campaign as feeling like "quick sand," where efforts to improve his position seemed to lead to greater difficulties. He noted that while there are now more opposition MPs in Parliament, the effectiveness of the government is not just about numbers. Ong stated that establishing a balance between the ruling party and opposition is a continuous journey that evolves with each election. Voters, according to Ong, will consider how well the People's Action Party (PAP) performs, its willingness to listen to the people, and the integrity of MPs from both parties. He highlighted that Singaporeans have diverse aspirations and that unity should remain a priority despite political differences. When asked about his potential candidacy in the upcoming election, he expressed a desire to continue serving in Sembawang GRC, where he has been an MP for ten years. He shared pride in the area's development while preserving its unique character. Ong acknowledged that some residents might miss certain amenities but reassured them that the charm of Sembawang, such as its hot spring and kampung atmosphere, would be protected.
