Onion dye film enhances solar cell UV protection

interestingengineering.com

Researchers have found a new way to make solar cells last longer using natural materials. They tested films made from nanocellulose, a biopolymer, and treated it with dye from red onion skins. These films can block 99.9% of harmful UV radiation. This is significantly better than current commercial filters made from petroleum-based plastics like PET. Solar cells often degrade when exposed to UV light, so protective films are important for their lifespan. The study shows that these onion-dyed films are effective and environmentally friendly. They provide excellent UV protection while remaining transparent. Doctoral Researcher Rustem Nizamov from the University of Turku noted the potential for these bio-based materials in various applications.
