Online tenant verification system launching in Pune, Mumbai
Tenants in Pune and Mumbai will soon be able to verify their rental agreements online. The registration department is set to connect its data with the police network at 217 police stations in the area. This change is expected to begin in early April. Initially, 130 police stations in Mumbai and 87 in Pune will be included in this new system. It will help tenants avoid the need to visit police stations for verification. This step is the first phase of a broader plan to cover all 1,134 police stations in Maharashtra. The new online tenant verification system faced some delays because of software updates. However, officials confirm those issues have been resolved. The DIG of IT, Abhay Mohite, stated that the new software will be integrated with the police network, which will streamline the process for citizens. In recent actions, Mumbai police filed charges against property owners who did not provide tenant information, as required by local mandates. This includes submitting names, addresses, photographs, and references. The law can lead to up to one year in jail if property owners fail to comply. Real estate professionals support the new online verification system, seeing it as a much-needed improvement. It encourages property owners to register documents properly, rather than relying on informal agreements. Overall, this initiative aims to enhance safety and accountability in the housing sector while making the verification process easier for tenants.
