Ontario not ready for involuntary addiction treatment implementation
Ontario's mental health and addictions minister, Michael Tibollo, stated that the province is not ready to consider involuntary treatment for addiction due to the current system's stress. He emphasized the need to improve access to services. Tibollo aims to enhance local withdrawal management capacity, as Ontario faces a growing addiction crisis. The number of fatal overdoses has surged, particularly in homeless shelters, prompting calls for a system overhaul. While mayors have requested a review of mental health laws for potential involuntary treatment, Tibollo noted that the system must first be able to meet demand. He indicated that legislation would be necessary for any future involuntary treatment measures.
