Open-road tolling launches on Pennsylvania Turnpike next week
Open-road tolling will begin on the Pennsylvania Turnpike east of Reading and on the Northeast Extension starting Sunday. This new system uses overhead gantries to collect tolls electronically, replacing traditional toll booths. Drivers will be billed through E-ZPass transponders or by license plate recognition. The turnpike plans to implement open-road tolling across the entire route by 2027. In 2025, toll rates may change slightly for most drivers due to new vehicle classification. Construction is also ongoing to expand the Northeast Extension from four to six lanes, expected to finish in 2025.
