Open Space Institute acquires 850 acres for Black River State Park in South Carolina
The Open Space Institute has acquired nearly 850 acres for the Black River State Park, adding the Mingo and Cold Creek tracts. This brings the total to nine tracts in the park network, which aims to enhance recreational access along the Black River. The Mingo tract covers 665 acres, while Cold Creek spans 180 acres, both located in Georgetown County. They provide nearly five miles of shoreline and will support activities like paddling and minimal-impact camping. These properties will be transferred to the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism in 2025. Funding for the acquisition came from various conservation organizations, highlighting a collaborative effort to protect the area's ecological and historical features.
