Opposition grows against Ooty eco-park development plans
Ecologists and conservationists are urging the State government to reconsider its plan for an eco-park at the Ooty Race Course. They emphasize the need to protect the wetland and restore native plants, which are vital for local biodiversity. State officials have announced a ₹70-crore project for a 52-acre eco-park, featuring spice gardens and nature trails. However, local experts warn that development could harm the wetland's ecological functions, which help prevent flooding and support wildlife. Conservationists suggest using native flora in the project to enhance biodiversity and maintain the area's ecological role. They call for a study to assess species diversity and ensure the habitat for local wildlife is preserved.
