Opposition grows against Silahalla hydroelectric project in Nilgiris
The Nilgiris Nelikolu Micro and Small Tea Growers and Farmers’ Development Society (NSTF) has expressed strong opposition to the Silahalla Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Project. They wrote to the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB), questioning its authority to hold public consultations about the project. The farmers argue that projects over 50 megawatts need approval from the Union Ministry. Therefore, they believe the TNPCB has no right to conduct the consultation. They also cited environmental concerns, saying the project violates rules that protect ecosystems near wildlife sanctuaries. The site for the project is near Mukurthi National Park, which is known for its rich biodiversity. Hubbathalai N. Sivan, president of the NSTF, highlighted water pollution issues along the M. Palada river from carrot farming. Farmers use many chemicals, which harms the fragile Nilgiris ecosystem. This pollution affects not only their area but also neighboring districts, as contaminated water reaches larger rivers like the Bhavani and Cauvery. The farmers' group has urged local authorities to stop the project and address the pollution from harmful agricultural practices in the region. They called for immediate action to protect the district's water bodies and environment.
