Ortega seeks clarity on VP Duterte's impeachment case
La Union 1st District Representative Paolo Ortega V received advice from Senate President Francis Escudero regarding the impeachment process of Vice President Sara Duterte. Ortega acknowledged that Escudero's guidance to study the impeachment further was valuable. He described Escudero's advice as brotherly, emphasizing the importance of understanding the rules and legal processes involved. Ortega mentioned that there are many differing legal opinions circulating about the impeachment trial. He believes it is important for lawmakers to fully grasp the issues at hand. He clarified that he is not part of the prosecution team and intends to share his thoughts without jeopardizing the case. He values free speech and believes discussions about the impeachment are essential. Vice President Duterte was impeached on February 5 by the House of Representatives. This followed a complaint involving allegations of misuse of funds and threats made towards officials, including President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. The impeachment articles were sent to the Senate, but the trial has not yet begun because Congress must reconvene after elections to address the matter. Senate President Escudero previously indicated that the trial might start by July 30 with new lawmakers acting as senator-judges. Some House lawmakers have expressed urgency for the trial to commence soon, raising concerns that delays could affect witnesses and evidence.
