Over 1,000 killed in Syria's violent clashes

Syria experienced severe violence last week, with over 1,000 people killed in clashes between security forces and supporters of former leader Bashar al-Assad. The fighting began when armed groups mobilized to attack the Alawite community, Assad's sect. Fighters used pickup trucks, tanks, and heavy weapons to target Alawite neighborhoods, particularly in Baniyas and surrounding areas. Reports indicate that pro-government forces opened fire on civilians, leading to widespread casualties. The new government, led by the Sunni Islamist group HTS, has condemned the killings. Interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa vowed to hold accountable those responsible, including government affiliates.
