Over 11,000 residents evacuated from danger zone around Mt. Kanlaon in Negros Occidental

Authorities have evacuated over 11,000 residents from the six-kilometer danger zone around Mt. Kanlaon in Negros Occidental due to increased volcanic activity. The evacuation, completed on December 16, involved residents from Bago City, La Carlota City, and La Castellana. In Canlaon City, 5,229 out of 6,092 residents in the danger zone have also been evacuated. Checkpoints have been established, and public transport has been rerouted to ensure safety. Some indigenous residents initially resisted evacuation but were advised to comply. Bago City has declared a state of calamity to access emergency funds for relief efforts. The mayor noted concerns about sustaining resources for evacuees, as the city faces challenges in providing food and support.
