Over 200 NPA rebels neutralized in Philippines this year
The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) reported that over 200 members of the New People’s Army (NPA) have been neutralized since January 2025. This includes those who surrendered, were apprehended, or killed in military operations. AFP spokesperson Col. Francel Margareth Padilla shared the figures at a press briefing. Of the total 242 individuals counted, 206 surrendered, 17 were apprehended, and 19 were killed. The military considers these individuals as part of a communist terrorist group. Additionally, 159 firearms were taken from the rebels. Padilla encouraged remaining NPA members to surrender and join government amnesty programs. The amnesty is available until 2026. The government hopes this will lead more insurgents to abandon their armed struggle. This amnesty program was established under proclamations by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. last year and offers pardons for criminal cases tied to political beliefs. In a previous report, Padilla noted that the NPA has one weakened guerrilla front left. This unit is no longer able to carry out major operations, recruit new members, or gather resources. The NPA has been active since 1969, making it the world's longest-running Maoist insurgency.
