A literacy and numeracy test for newly literate adults was held in Gumla district on Sunday. This event was part of the Jharkhand State Literacy Mission. It took place at literacy classrooms, known as jan chetna kendras, across 12 blocks and 100 clusters. Out of 4,378 identified illiterates, 4,082 neo-literates took the test. The number of women participants, at 2,951, was much higher than that of men, who numbered 1,131. The district administration ensured that all education centers were open for the assessment. Noor Alam Khan, the district superintendent of education, reported that exam centers had appointed superintendents and invigilators. Neo-literates registered on the spot before taking the test. The assessments were supported by block programme officers and resource persons. The jan chetna kendras, managed by volunteers, offer basic literacy training. This initiative targets those who have not received formal literacy certificates. The national institute of open schooling oversees these assessments for adults learning to read and write.
