Over 50 poll code violation cases unresolved in Chennai
More than 60 cases related to poll-code violations from the last Lok Sabha election are still unresolved. These cases were recorded between March 16 and April 14 across 11 Assembly segments in Chennai. According to information obtained through the Right to Information Act, a total of 64 first information reports (FIRs) were filed. The majority of these cases are in Saidapet, with 23 cases, followed by T. Nagar with 11, and others in R.K. Nagar, Velachery, Egmore, and Mylapore. R. Karthikeyan, who requested the data, stated that police often do not pursue these investigations. He believes this is due to political pressure, as many violations involve local politicians. He expressed concern that the police may delay actions until the cases become time-barred, allowing the accused to seek legal loopholes. A senior police officer responded, stating that the outstanding cases primarily involve minor violations. He emphasized that the department is committed to addressing serious offenses, such as violence during elections, and will ensure legal action is taken where necessary.
