Over 9,400 evacuated as Kanlaon Volcano erupts in the Philippines
More than 9,400 people have been evacuated following the eruption of Kanlaon Volcano in the Philippines on December 9, 2024. The Office of the Civil Defense reported that 2,880 families were moved from municipalities in Negros Occidental. Evacuation efforts focused on families within a six-kilometer danger zone. The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office is prepared for more evacuations as needed. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology raised the alert level from 2 to 3 due to increased volcanic activity. An estimated 34,000 people require basic supplies like food.
