Owensboro's half marathon and 5K attracts over 1,000
Runners and walkers gathered at Smother’s Park in Owensboro on Saturday for the sixth annual Wendell Foster Half Marathon and 5K. This year, more than 1,000 participants registered, surpassing last year's total of about 900. Kara Howard, the race coordinator and vice president of Wendell Foster, highlighted the inclusion of a duos team division in the 5K. This allowed a runner to push a person with a disability in a customized wheelchair. The event featured divisions for participants with disabilities, where they tracked their steps toward a set goal. The race aims to raise awareness and funds for individuals with special needs. Howard noted that this is one of the organization’s two major annual fundraisers, and it promotes strong community engagement. Participants picked up their race packets and T-shirts at an Expo event on Friday. On race day, runners started around 7:30 a.m. and traveled through key roads, including J.R. Miller Boulevard and Frederica Street. Hydration stations were placed throughout the course, with volunteers offering support. Runners from 16 states, including Washington and California, joined the race, showcasing a broad reach. Owensboro Health was the primary sponsor, along with other local businesses. Howard expressed gratitude for the nearly 400 volunteers and the support from the Owensboro Police Department and the City of Owensboro that made the event possible.
