Oyster cracker recall expanded due to stainless steel contamination
Several thousand packages of oyster crackers are being recalled due to potential contamination with "foreign material." The recall began on February 21, by Shearer’s Foods, LLC, a food manufacturer based in Ohio. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently upgraded the recall to Class II. This classification means there is some risk that the products may cause temporary health issues, but serious problems are unlikely. The recall affects several brands, including Market Pantry from Target, Great Value from Walmart, Giant Eagle, and VISTA, as well as a bulk variety not sold in stores. In total, about 15,874 cases of these crackers are included in the recall. The affected products were distributed in many states, including Alabama, California, and Texas, among others. While officials have not detailed how the contamination occurred, the FDA mentioned "stainless steel wire" as a possible concern. Consumers who have purchased these oyster crackers are advised to return them where they bought them for a refund or exchange. Incidents of metal contamination in food products are not uncommon. Recently, more than two million MadeGood granola bars were recalled due to similar concerns. In January, ALDI also recalled chicken taquitos for the same reason.
