Pacific islands propose ecocide recognition as international crime
The Guardian — September 9, 2024, 11:01 PM UTC
Vanuatu, Fiji, and Samoa have proposed to the International Criminal Court (ICC) that ecocide be recognized as a crime alongside genocide and war crimes. This submission aims to hold individuals accountable for severe environmental damage. The proposal, tabled in New York, follows years of advocacy and could take years to discuss. Currently, over 120 countries are parties to the ICC, but major emitters like the US and China are not.
