Pakistan and Afghanistan have agreed to strengthen their diplomatic relations. This decision was made during a meeting on Saturday between Pakistan's special envoy, Ambassador Muhammad Sadiq, and Afghanistan's acting foreign minister, Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi. The meeting took place in Kabul. Both sides highlighted the importance of joint meetings and the exchange of delegations to tackle unresolved issues. The discussions covered many topics, including trade, security, and the situation of Afghan refugees in Pakistan. Ambassador Sadiq is on a three-day visit to Afghanistan to improve ties that have been strained due to security concerns. After the meeting, he confirmed on social media that both countries aim to enhance high-level communication and cooperation. One significant outcome from the talks was the reopening of the Torkham border. This border had been closed for 27 days due to a dispute over construction activities. It reopened following negotiations and is currently under a temporary arrangement until April 15. The Afghan foreign minister stated that trade obstacles should not be linked to other issues. Ambassador Sadiq responded by promising practical measures to address these concerns. Another key issue discussed was the status of Afghan refugees in Pakistan. Currently, more than 3.1 million Afghans live in Pakistan, including around 1.35 million registered refugees. The Pakistani government has set a March 31 deadline for illegal residents to leave voluntarily, or face deportation. Registered refugees holding Proof of Registration cards have been allowed to stay until June 30, 2025, but those in Islamabad and Rawalpindi will be relocated. The Afghan foreign minister stressed that refugees should be allowed to return home with dignity. Ambassador Sadiq pledged to support visa issuance and travel arrangements for Afghan nationals. He also emphasized the importance of Afghanistan's security for regional stability. The envoy's visit will conclude on Sunday, with more discussions planned on trade facilitation and counterterrorism.
