Pakistan's army chief urges stronger governance against terrorism
Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir addressed rising terror attacks in Pakistan, especially in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. He criticized the country’s "soft state" image, linking it to the loss of innocent lives and calling for improvements in governance. Munir stressed the need for Pakistan to become a "hard state" and not rely solely on military sacrifices. His comments came during a meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security, which saw notable absences from major opposition parties, including the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). This meeting followed a significant terrorist attack where militants targeted a passenger train in Balochistan. Security forces engaged in a complex operation, killing 33 attackers and rescuing hostages, but unfortunately, 26 passengers lost their lives. At the meeting, Munir highlighted that national security is paramount, urging all parties to unite for the country's safety. He made it clear that terrorism must be defeated alongside those who support such acts. The committee condemned recent terrorist incidents and emphasized the need for a coordinated political commitment to fight against terrorism effectively. Participants agreed on the urgent need to implement the National Action Plan and dismantle terrorist networks. Concerns were also raised about terrorist groups using social media for propaganda and recruitment. The committee recognized the sacrifices made by security forces and expressed support for their ongoing efforts in combating terrorism. There is a strong determination that no individuals or groups aiding enemies of the state will be tolerated.
