Pakistan's PM calls for reform in climate financing at COP29 summit
At the COP29 summit, Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized that debt should not be the norm in climate financing for vulnerable nations. He called for a redefined global climate finance framework to support developing countries without increasing their debt burdens. Sharif highlighted the urgent need for $6.8 trillion by 2030 to help these countries meet their climate goals. He urged donor nations to fulfill their financial commitments and improve transparency in climate funding. During the summit, Sharif also stressed the importance of protecting glaciers, linking their health to humanity's survival. He noted that Pakistan, home to 7,000 glaciers, faces significant threats from glacial melt and rising temperatures.
