Panjab University’s history department has clarified that a lecture on Master Tara Singh was never finalized, following a controversy over its supposed cancellation. Rajya Sabha member Tarlochan Singh raised concerns after contacting the university’s vice-chancellor. According to Professor Jasbir Singh, chairperson of the history department, the planned memorial lecture for Master Tara Singh was not set for March 19 as claimed. The Guru Nanak Research Institute from Birmingham had sent invitations for that date without informing the university. Singh explained that scheduling conflicts and miscommunication were the reasons for the confusion. Vice-Chancellor Professor Renu Vig emphasized that the event aimed to honor Master Tara Singh, rather than focus solely on his life. She mentioned plans for a monthly colloquium related to partition and Sikhism in the near future. Kiranjot Kaur, Master Tara Singh’s granddaughter and a member of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, expressed her disappointment on Facebook. She found it shocking that his significant contributions were overlooked. Former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi was listed as the chief guest for the event by the Birmingham Institute, but Panjab University officials stated they were not informed about this. Master Tara Singh is remembered for his leadership during the partition, guiding Sikhs toward India and helping organize the SGPC.
