Panjim Footballers relegated from Goa Professional League
Panjim Footballers have been relegated from the Goa Professional League (GPL) after six years in the top tier. The team finished at the bottom of the table, with only eight points, even though they still had one match to play. Vasco Sports Club's recent victory against Pax of Nagoa secured their safety with 12 points. Panjim Footballers were promoted to the GPL during the 2018-19 season. Angelo Albuquerque, the club's patron and founder, said the team aimed to provide opportunities for young talent. He highlighted their best season, when they finished sixth, led by captain Dattaraj Gauncar. During their time in the GPL, the club developed many promising players, including Irfan Yadwad, who now plays for Chennaiyin FC. Club president Anthony Vas remembered their first match in the league, where they drew 2–2 against Salgaocar FC. They also had notable moments, like their 1–1 draw against Sporting Clube de Goa. Panjim Footballers achieved a significant victory in 2021, defeating Dempo SC 1–0 in the final, thanks to a goal from Joyson Gauncar. Despite their relegation, the club has a rich history and has played an important role in fostering young football talent in the region.
