Paragliding World Cup boosts tourism in Himachal Pradesh despite safety concerns

The 2024 Asian Paragliding World Cup is taking place in Bir, Himachal Pradesh, attracting 94 pilots from 26 countries. The event highlights the village's growth as a paragliding hub, with daily tourist numbers reaching 8,000 to 10,000. Despite the excitement, Bir faces challenges from commercialization and overtourism. Recent accidents, including two fatalities before the event, have raised concerns, but the number of tourists participating in tandem flights remains high, with around 1,400 daily. Local officials are focusing on safety, deploying 50 ambulances and two helicopters for emergencies. The rise in paragliding has transformed Bir's economy, with many residents now employed in the tourism sector, although the risks associated with the sport persist.
