Parramatta seeks $50 million for theatre redevelopment
Western Sydney officials are urging the federal government to provide $50 million for a major redevelopment of Parramatta's Riverside Theatres. The project aims to create a new 1,500-seat Broadway-style lyric theatre, but it currently faces a funding shortfall of $90 million. The total cost to revamp the theatre complex is estimated at $270 million, rising significantly due to increased labor and material costs. Parramatta Lord Mayor Martin Zaiter emphasized the need for government support, noting that more residents now live west of Parramatta than to its east. He pointed out that the state government has already contributed $40 million to the project. Last May, a team of architects was chosen to redesign Riverside Theatres into a world-class venue expected to attract over 400,000 visitors each year. Changes planned include a refurbished 700-seat theatre, a new 325-seat venue, and a 100-seat digital studio. The local council has applied for federal funding and is also exploring ways to reduce project costs. Some design adjustments are already underway to save 10 to 15 percent. However, if further cuts are needed, important facilities such as the cinema may have to be removed, or the project's timeline delayed. Officials have highlighted the redevelopment's significance for the cultural scene in Parramatta, which is rapidly growing. Federal MP Andrew Charlton affirmed the project's importance, stating it will help enhance the entertainment landscape of the city. Supporters of Riverside Theatres believe that additional funding is crucial not only for the redevelopment but also for supporting the resident theatre company that showcases local stories. The theatre has historical significance, having received federal funding during Australia’s Bicentennial celebrations in 1988.
