Parsi fashion evolves with modern designs for Navroz
Today, Parsis are celebrating Navroz, their New Year, and reflecting on their fashion. Parsi clothing has evolved over time while still honoring tradition. Classic pieces like the Gara embroidered sarees and white jacket-style daglis remain popular. Gara embroidery is a key element in Parsi fashion. Designer Ashdeen Z Lilaowala notes that the designs often feature birds and flowers. This style was introduced to India in the 19th century when Parsis traded in China. Today, Gara motifs can be found on various garments like sarees, dresses, and lehengas. The white dagli is another staple. Although it is a traditional piece worn over a shirt and pants, modern versions have seen changes. Designer Kaizad Wadia mentions that these jackets now include embellishments, use polyester instead of cotton, and come in different colors like black and denim. Ceremonial wear also plays a significant role in Parsi culture. Phetas and paghdis remain important for events like weddings. Ashdeen explains that these items have changed with new colors and fabrics. Jhablas, or tunics, are popular among youth during rites of passage. Sadras, the soft vests, have also been updated to enhance practicality while maintaining tradition.
