Paul McCartney's signed coin sells for $600,000
A special auction featuring unique coins honoring Paul McCartney has raised a total of $753,600 (£582,808). The Royal Mint created these coins with the help of McCartney's production company, MPL Communications. Among the collection, one gold coin sold for $600,000, making it one of the most valuable British coins ever. Only one gold coin and four silver coins were produced in this limited edition. The unique 5kg gold coin took over 250 hours to make, including three days for polishing. It was hand-signed by McCartney during his tour in Paris in 2024. The silver coins, each weighing 5kg, sold for $38,400 and featured bright hand-enameling inspired by McCartney's psychedelic "Magic Piano." The auction sale is part of The Royal Mint's Music Legends series, which celebrates iconic musicians. Paul McCartney expressed his surprise and excitement about being honored in this way. He reminisced about collecting coins as a child and described the coins as "pretty cool." A portion of the auction's proceeds will be donated to charity. Brian Kendrella, president of Stack’s Bowers Galleries, emphasized the significance of McCartney's music and how these coins will be cherished by fans for generations. Additionally, The Royal Mint will soon release a commemorative coin for John Lennon, marking what would have been his 85th birthday. This coin features a portrait of Lennon based on a famous photo and includes the word "Imagine," a nod to his iconic song.
