Peckham Wetherspoons offers pints for £1.49 Mondays
A Wetherspoons pub in Peckham, London, is being called the "cheapest" in Britain, offering pints for as low as £1.49. The Kentish Drovers runs a special promotion every Monday, making beers available for prices not seen in the UK for about 30 years. Customers can choose from options like Worthington Cream Flow and Green King IPA at this low price. Other beers are priced below £2. A staff member explained that the pub’s location, nearly a mile from the nearest train station, contributes to its lower prices. Wetherspoons typically charges more for pubs closer to transport hubs due to higher foot traffic. The Kentish Drovers manager assured patrons that their prices are always competitive compared to other nearby Wetherspoons. Despite these low prices, the pub industry is facing challenges. Many pubs have closed recently, resulting in about 4,500 job losses. The British Beer and Pub Association emphasized that while demand is strong, high operating costs are hurting profits. Starting next month, a new regulation will introduce fees for pubs selling takeaway pints. This change has raised concerns among pub owners, who benefited from the flexibility offered during the pandemic. Meanwhile, Wetherspoons is also closing several branches, including The Spon Gate in Coventry on May 25, and The Quay in Poole on March 23. Despite these closures, the pub chain remains popular for its affordable food and drink offerings.
