Penn Hills' Ulyas aids Burrell hockey in finals

Mike Ulyas, a senior from Penn Hills, has made a smooth transition to the Burrell hockey team, which returned many players from the previous season’s PIHL Division 2 championship. Ulyas expressed gratitude for the warm welcome he received, saying it felt like he had been part of the team before. This season, the Burrell Buccaneers reached the Division 2 championship for the second year in a row, although they lost to Morgantown (W.Va.) 5-1 in the final match on March 18. Burrell coach Drew Burkett noted that Ulyas' prior experience with the team made it easier for him to fit in. Ulyas played a versatile role on the team, switching between forward and defense. He contributed seven points, including one goal and six assists, throughout the season. Having previously played dek hockey and for the Allegheny Badgers, Ulyas has always been involved in hockey, even working at the Palmer Imaging Arena in Delmont. Burkett praised Ulyas for his adaptability, calling him a "Swiss Army knife" for the team. Ulyas understood both positions well and did not mind moving back and forth as needed. Since Morgantown is not a Pennsylvania team, Burrell secured a spot in the Pennsylvania Cup as well as a chance to compete at nationals. Ulyas had anticipated the team's successful season and was eager to be part of it. He expressed confidence in contributing to Burrell's achievements.
