Penns Grove man sentenced for counterfeit check scheme
A man from New Jersey has been sentenced to over nine years in prison for his role in fraud schemes. Dezhon McCrae, 25, was found guilty of using stolen mail to create counterfeit checks. He received his sentence on Thursday from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for New Jersey. McCrae was involved in various criminal activities between 2018 and 2020. He and his accomplices stole checks from the mail and made fake checks using the same routing and account numbers. To further their scheme, they advertised on social media, asking people to provide their account information for deposits. Once the deposits were made, McCrae and his group quickly transferred the money into different accounts. He faced multiple charges, including identity theft and conspiracy to commit bank fraud.
