Pennsylvania plugs 300 orphaned wells, improving safety
The Shapiro Administration has plugged its 300th orphaned or abandoned well in Pennsylvania, surpassing the number of wells plugged in the previous decade within just two years. This milestone aims to reduce methane emissions and create jobs. The well was plugged in North Franklin Township, Washington County, under an emergency contract. The project is part of a broader effort to address over 27,000 identified orphaned wells, focusing on those posing the highest risks. New contracts will prioritize high-risk wells to enhance efficiency and mitigate environmental threats. The initiative is supported by state and federal funding, aiming to protect public health and promote rural community development.
