Pennsylvania senators address rural education funding disparities
Senators Lisa Baker and Lynda Schlegel Culver have expressed concern about funding disparities affecting rural schools in Pennsylvania. In a letter to Acting Secretary of Education Dr. Carrie Rowe, they discussed how these disparities limit rural districts’ abilities to hire teachers, upgrade technology, and improve educational programs. The senators raised alarms about inadequate funding in Governor Josh Shapiro's proposed budget. They emphasized that larger, better-funded schools often attract experienced educators away from rural areas, which can hinder students' learning opportunities. "We must ensure that students in small communities have the same opportunities for success," said Senator Baker. In addition to funding issues, the senators noted challenges such as rising costs from cyber charter schools and economic difficulties that further strain rural districts. They are calling for lawmakers and the governor's administration to collaborate on fair funding solutions for these communities. Senator Culver highlighted the importance of focusing on rural schools, which provide quality education but face budget challenges. She expressed hope that upcoming budget discussions could lead to effective solutions. To address these issues, the senators have invited Secretary Rowe to participate in a Community Conversation in April. This event will bring together educators, parents, and policymakers to discuss rural education funding. The Northwest Area School District will host the event, aiming to find constructive ways to tackle these challenges.
