Pensioners are choosing Kent over traditional retirement hotspots
Retirees in the UK are increasingly moving to Kent, shifting away from traditional retirement spots like Devon and Cornwall. Kent, known as the "Garden of England," offers a vibrant culture, beautiful landscapes, and good transportation links, making it an appealing choice for those in their later years. Many modern retirees are looking for a lifestyle that allows for travel and connectivity to family, especially those living in London. Paul Adams from the estate agency Cognatum pointed out that today's retirees often want to remain close to their children and grandchildren, as well as maintain active roles in work or consulting. Kent's transportation system is a big draw. High-speed trains connect Canterbury to London in under an hour, and travelers have easy access to Europe via the Eurotunnel and ferry services from Dover. Major roads like the M20 make travel around the UK convenient as well. Besides transportation, Kent's lifestyle is attractive. With 350 miles of stunning coastline and charming market towns, the area combines natural beauty with cultural amenities. The climate in Kent is drier and sunnier compared to other regions, enhancing its appeal. Housing is varied in Kent. Popular areas such as Sevenoaks and Tunbridge Wells have higher property prices, with Sevenoaks averaging around £819,054. However, compared to London, Kent remains a more affordable option for retirees looking to downsize. A 79-year-old resident, Anne Osborn, moved to Wingham in 2021 and enjoys Kent’s advantages. She finds the property prices reasonable and appreciates the community's support while she travels. Anne highlights how accessible London and Europe are from Kent, making it ideal for her active lifestyle. She often visits local attractions, stating that Canterbury has fantastic shopping and facilities. With its beautiful countryside and numerous beach options, Kent offers retirees a rich and fulfilling environment to enjoy their later years.
