Pensioners must redeem £200 vouchers by March 19
Many pensioners have a chance to receive £200 in cost of living vouchers, but they need to act quickly as the deadline is approaching. The vouchers were issued by councils before Christmas to help people with their heating bills. Around 25 percent of eligible pensioners have not yet claimed these vouchers. They can be redeemed at the Post Office, but they must be used by March 19. Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council has reminded pensioners to take their letters to the Post Office soon to get their money. These payments are part of the Household Support Fund aimed at helping those in financial need. The Government provided this money to local councils, so different areas may have different rules for eligibility and deadlines. Pensioners who meet the criteria do not need to apply as they should have already received a letter. Councillor Paul Moore from Sandwell Council emphasized the importance of the vouchers for those on low incomes who do not qualify for Pension Credit. He urged anyone who has not claimed their payment to do so quickly. For those not eligible for the vouchers, councils have other support programs available, like the Local Welfare Provision scheme, which offers crisis payments. The Household Support Fund has distributed £421 million to local authorities since its inception in 2021. This fund provides assistance to vulnerable households dealing with the cost of living. Each council determines how to allocate the funds, so the support can vary across different areas. Pensioners and other residents are advised to contact their local authorities to find out what assistance is available to them. Time is of the essence, as some funds may be limited.
