People's Alliance for Reform seeks solo contest in Tanjong Pagar
The People's Alliance for Reform (PAR) has called on other opposition parties to avoid contesting in Tanjong Pagar Group Representation Constituency (GRC) during the upcoming General Election. PAR secretary-general Lim Tean expressed a desire for a "straight fight" against the ruling People's Action Party (PAP). During a recent walkabout at a food center in Telok Blangah, Lim declared that PAR has been active in Tanjong Pagar since 2018 and feels familiar with the area. He mentioned that although he is not worried about potential three-cornered contests, he wishes other parties would not join the race. In the 2020 election, the PAP won Tanjong Pagar GRC with 63.1 percent of the vote against the Progress Singapore Party (PSP). Lim believes only Red Dot United (RDU) has hinted at contesting Tanjong Pagar but thinks they are likely focused on another constituency, so he appealed to all opposition parties to reconsider their interest. The PAR is made up of several parties, including Peoples Voice, the Reform Party, and the Democratic Progressive Party. The People's Power Party (PPP) recently withdrew from the alliance. Lim remains optimistic about the opposition's prospects, with a notable increase in new members. He emphasized that key campaign issues will include the cost of living, housing, jobs, and immigration. PAR plans to contest in eight Single Member Constituencies (SMCs) and two GRCs, including Tanjong Pagar. Lim noted that despite Tanjong Pagar's historical significance linked to founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, the constituency has changed significantly over time.
