Perambalur builds water troughs for wildlife support
The Forest department in Perambalur district is taking steps to help wildlife stay hydrated as summer approaches. They have built 20 new water troughs in the reserve forests to provide fresh water for animals and birds. The new troughs are part of an effort to prevent animals from wandering into nearby human areas in search of water as temperatures rise. Each trough can hold between 5,000 to 6,000 litres of water and was constructed at a cost of about ₹1.8 lakh. The troughs are located at various sites within the Perambalur and Veppanthattai forest ranges. These areas are home to various wildlife, including deer, wild boar, and numerous bird species. During hot weather, animals often leave their habitats looking for water, which can lead to them being hit by vehicles. The new troughs aim to reduce this risk by providing a reliable water source. In addition to the new installations, the Forest department is also cleaning and repairing existing troughs. Water is being supplied to these troughs using tankers sourced from nearby ponds and tanks. Officials say they also plan to maintain water troughs in other districts, like Pudukottai.
