Perth faces unprecedented March heatwave after 40 years
Perth is experiencing an unusual heatwave that is expected to last for several days. This heatwave has not been seen in 40 years, affecting both Perth and many coastal communities in Western Australia. Temperatures in Perth are forecasted to remain above 35 degrees Celsius for the next five days. This is unusually high for late March. Jessica Lingard from the Bureau of Meteorology noted that the last similar stretch of heat occurred on March 25, 1985. While warm weather in March isn't entirely uncommon, Lingard highlighted that having four consecutive days above 37 degrees Celsius is unusual. The record high for March in Perth is 42.4 degrees Celsius. Authorities are reminding people that heatwaves can be dangerous. They urge vulnerable individuals to take precautions during this period of extreme heat, especially if they must be outdoors. Additionally, a tropical low has formed off the north-west coast of Western Australia. There is a good chance it will develop into a tropical cyclone named Courtney. However, it is not expected to directly impact mainland Australia as it will likely move away from the coast.
