PETA highlights pigeons' value at Dadar Kabutarkhana

Mumbai: PETA India has put up a message at Dadar's Kabutarkhana, urging people to show kindness to pigeons. The group describes pigeons as "sky puppies," highlighting that they are as sensitive and deserving of care as dogs. The message aims to combat the view that pigeons are a health risk, following a recent documentary. PETA said that common rock pigeons are native to India, with some brought by Europeans. Studies show the risk of pigeons spreading diseases to humans is very low, even for those in frequent contact with them. Pigeons are believed to be resistant to bird flu, unlike chickens and cows on crowded farms, which can carry diseases. Dr. Mini Aravindan, PETA India's Director of Veterinary Services, emphasized the need for compassion. She argued that while pigeons rarely spread diseases, humans often transmit illnesses to one another. PETA encourages those worried about bird-related diseases to adopt a vegan lifestyle and support efforts to shut down harmful poultry farms. Sandeep Doshi, a trustee of the Dadar Kabutarkhana, stated he has fed pigeons for 58 years without any health issues. He vowed to protest if the authorities attempt to demolish the site, which serves people from various religions who come to feed the birds.
