Phagwah Parade celebrates Holi in Little Guyana, Queens
Hundreds of people attended the 37th annual Phagwah Parade in Richmond Hill, Queens, on Sunday. The parade celebrated Holi, also known as Phagwah, which is an important festival in Indo-Caribbean culture. Participants threw colorful powder on each other as they made their way down Liberty Avenue to Phil "Scooter" Rizzuto Park. This celebration brings together communities and marks the arrival of spring. It symbolizes the victory of good over evil. Tamesh Sukul from Westchester expressed his joy at the event. He said it is a “celebration of life, of color, of belonging.” He plays drums at the parade every year. Sabatini Bipat from Westbury, Long Island, attended the parade with her family. She noted that the event is about family and culture. “It’s about all of us coming together to celebrate this beautiful festival of ours,” she added.
