Phantoms team qualifies for nationals in Kalamazoo
The Lehigh Valley Phantoms 14U-AA hockey team is heading to a national tournament for the first time. They won both district and regional titles and will represent the Atlantic region in Kalamazoo, Michigan, from April 2-6. Coached by Ryan Bertelsen, the team managed to achieve this historic milestone after a year of hard work and dedication. They recently completed a sweep over the Palmyra Black Knights to win the regional national qualifier championship. With a record of 50 wins, 19 losses, and 1 tie, they became the first Phantoms team to reach 50 wins in a season. The team has players from various school districts and even a couple from outside Pennsylvania. Bertelsen notes that their commitment has been exceptional, as many players show up early for practices and games. They have embraced the team’s goals, whether it’s scoring or playing good defense. Bertelsen emphasizes that success comes from teamwork and understanding roles. The players adapt to different strategies based on their opponents, showcasing both skill and tactical approaches on the ice. The team has also received support from assistant coaches and experienced players from the Phantoms organization. Their journey to nationals will require fundraising efforts, as they are looking for sponsors to help with travel costs. They have set up a Go Fund Me campaign to assist with expenses.
