Phil Jones reflects on injuries affecting his career
Former Manchester United defender Phil Jones expressed his "embarrassment" over the injuries that affected his career at the club. He shared his feelings about the challenges faced by current players Mason Mount and Luke Shaw, who have been sidelined with injuries. Mount and Shaw have both been unable to play since early December due to hamstring and calf issues. Mount, who transferred from Chelsea for £55 million in 2022, has missed 51 matches. Shaw, who joined United from Southampton for £27 million in 2014, has been unavailable for more games than he has played. Jones, whose own career was cut short by injuries before retiring at 31 in 2023, understands their struggles. He shared that feeling embarrassed was a common reaction for him while playing at Manchester United, the biggest club in the world. "When you can't do something, it’s taken away from you," he said. He also noted the pressure these players face from fans and social media. Despite the criticism, Jones emphasized that Mount and Shaw should only return to play when they feel fully ready. He mentioned that players should prioritize their comfort and confidence before coming back to compete at a high level.
